Overview

Overview

Coldstream Hills prides itself for having access to many of the best vineyards in the Yarra Valley. These sites are found throughout the upper and lower Yarra Valley with each vineyard providing a range of unique characteristics to the wines. Back in the late 1980s, James Halliday introduced single vineyard wines to Coldstream Hills demonstrating their unique styles. The tradition has continued with the release of the Single Vineyard range.

Note: The tasting note reflects the wine when it was tasted upon its release. It has since evolved and developed further complexity following years of careful bottle maturation in our cellars.
Our winemaking team have recently tasted this wine and confirmed its condition. It is drinking beautifully today showcasing intriguing aged characteristics that can only be derived with the passage of time.

Taste Description

Nose

Attractive and restrained, the wine exhibits vibrant notes of lime citrus, stone-fruit and white flowers. Underlying nuances of slate-mineral and nougat are evident, with beautifully balanced and seamless French oak adding further complexity.

Flavours and Palate

Fine, pure and layered, the wine displays vibrant characters of lemon curd and white peach. Secondary notes of nougat and grilled cashew nut underpinned by the very subtle presence of French oak. Harmonious and textural, the palate is long and finishes with beautifully balanced acidity.

Yarra Valley, Victoria

Cooler than Bordeaux yet warmer than Burgundy, picturesque Yarra Valley is one of Australia's foremost cool-climate wine regions. An easy one-hour’s drive from Melbourne, the area is home to more than 80 cellar doors. In addition to the huge range of wineries, the area boasts superb contemporary restaurants, authentic rustic farms - and luxury overnight accommodation if the sightseeing gets too much! The fertile Yarra Valley soils produce famously elegant and textured Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season commenced with below average spring rainfall followed by a dry and warm ripening period. Average yields, combined with healthy vine canopies resulted in early flavour development in most vineyards and a compressed harvest intake.

Andrew Fleming - Chief Winemaker

Growing up in wine country Mildura, at just 13 years of age, Andrew attempted to make his own wine; the end result was undrinkable, his father’s shed a shambles, but the winemaking seed was sown.
After completing a Bachelor of Agriculture at the University of Melbourne, Andrew spent two years at Mildara in Coonawarra before heading to Bordeaux where he furthered his winemaking qualifications with a Diplome National d’Oenologue from the University of Bordeaux. Since then he’s completed vintages at the iconic Chateau Haut Brion in Bordeaux, several vintages in Languedoc, in addition to completing a vintage at Matanzas Creek winery in California’s Sonoma Valley. For six years Andrew was a Winemaker at Lindeman’s Karadoc winery and in 1996, became the Winery Manager of Seppelt in Great Western; providing the perfect segue for his current role as Chief Winemaker Coldstream Hills which he has held since 2001.
