Overview

Overview

Coldstream Hills prides itself for having access to many of the best vineyards in the Yarra Valley. Back in the late 1980s, James Halliday introduced single vineyard wines to Coldstream Hills demonstrating their unique styles. The tradition has continued with the release of the Single Vineyard range.

At higher altitude and planted in 1994 on grey clay-loam soil, the Coldstream Hills Deer Farm Vineyard in Gladysdale produces charming Pinot Noir wines with sour cherry, hints of blue fruits and chalky tannins. Ethereal and perfumed with notes of muddled strawberries and cranberries, this is a beautifully framed wine.

"Deep, bright red-purple colour; smoky oak skilfully entwined with dark-cherry aromas and the palate is similarly rich and fleshy, deep and layered, with succulent flavour and fruit sweetness perfectly balanced with fine grained and persistent tannins that give the wine really smart structure. Long carry. Thoroughly satisfying pinot noir." - Huon Hooke

Nose

Savoury and complex, with raspberry, sour cherry and blueberry notes underpinned by graphite mineral and spicy French oak. Hints of whole bunch spice add complexity and perfume.

Flavours and Palate

Medium-bodied in style, with great texture and a silky tannin finish. Vibrant raspberry, muddled strawberry and sour cherry characters are beautifully enhanced with mineral graphite, finely tuned French oak and whole bunch spice. Great length and structure from an outstanding vintage

Yarra Valley, Victoria

Cooler than Bordeaux yet warmer than Burgundy, picturesque Yarra Valley is one of Australia's foremost cool-climate wine regions. An easy one-hour’s drive from Melbourne, the area is home to more than 80 cellar doors. In addition to the huge range of wineries, the area boasts superb contemporary restaurants, authentic rustic farms - and luxury overnight accommodation if the sightseeing gets too much! The fertile Yarra Valley soils produce famously elegant and textured Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Vintage Conditions

A cold wet start to the growing season proved challenging in the vineyards with fruit set and ultimately yields lower than average. Summer began with high humidity, but during the ripening period became stable and dry. The onset of flavour development occurred relatively rapidly with fine acidity retained across all varieties.
