Overview

Overview

The Reserve selection begins in the vineyard, invariably anchored on the low yielding Amphitheatre A Block - the steep north facing slope planted below the winery in 1985.

The Reserve Pinot Noir is built to age, yet embodies style and elegance. The warm 2013 vintage produced Pinot Noir with exceptional colour and structure. Brooding in nature, this wine delivers vibrant dark cherry and plum with impressive length of flavour and a persistent powdery tannin finish. Opulent and expressive, this wine will reward careful cellaring. It quite simply is a cracker.

Halliday Wine Companion

"Estate-grown from the famed Amphitheatre and G Blocks, the fruit vinified in small open fermenters. This is a controlled, cellar-worthy release with terrific persistence of flavour. Cherry-plum, inshot spice, cloves, satsuma plum, bacon. Softness to the fruit, firmness to the tannin, chalkiness to the finish. It plays its hand on a few fronts (whole bunches, oak, spice, fruit) but keeps them in strict formation, a military flyover of flavour and texture. Nothing short of a stellar release."

Campbell Mattinson

"Grown mostly on a steep block of vines planted in 1985. Vines that have become Yarra Valley royalty, you could say.

This release is certainly more cellarworthy than drink now. It’s tannic and spicy and persistent, rather than pretty or up-front. Patience is required. Plums, cherries, bacon and spice, with clove and stem notes aplenty. Ultra-firm finish; nothing is left to chance. Folks will be admiring this in decades to come, I suspect."

Huon Hooke

"Medium to deep red/purple hue; aromas of black fruits, with a tinge of oak and some ironstone mineral notes. It's medium to full-bodied, dense and fleshy, with structure and power on the palate. Deep and long with an authoritative grip. A superb pinot, which is starting to show its true value and will have a long life. (about 20% whole-bunch fermentation)"

The wine has great presence, texture and length with vibrant dark cherry and plum characters dominating. Savouriness and spice are complemented with underlying mineral, spice and supportive French oak. The palate is long and finishes with powdery, yet persistent tannins. Deep, opulent and brooding, a great Reserve Pinot Noir which will reward careful cellaring.

Yarra Valley, Victoria

Cooler than Bordeaux yet warmer than Burgundy, picturesque Yarra Valley is one of Australia's foremost cool-climate wine regions. An easy one-hour’s drive from Melbourne, the area is home to more than 80 cellar doors. In addition to the huge range of wineries, the area boasts superb contemporary restaurants, authentic rustic farms - and luxury overnight accommodation if the sightseeing gets too much! The fertile Yarra Valley soils produce famously elegant and textured Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The growing season commenced with below average spring rainfall followed by a dry and warm ripening period. Average yields, combined with healthy vine canopies resulted in early flavour development in most vineyards and a compressed harvest intake.

Sourced from handpicked fruit from the Coldstream Hills Estate Blocks, the fruit was fermented traditionally in small three tonne open fermenters. Whole bunches were used in the fermenters to add further complexity and structure.

Andrew Fleming - Chief Winemaker

Growing up in wine country Mildura, at just 13 years of age, Andrew attempted to make his own wine; the end result was undrinkable, his father’s shed a shambles, but the winemaking seed was sown.
After completing a Bachelor of Agriculture at the University of Melbourne, Andrew spent two years at Mildara in Coonawarra before heading to Bordeaux where he furthered his winemaking qualifications with a Diplome National d’Oenologue from the University of Bordeaux. Since then he’s completed vintages at the iconic Chateau Haut Brion in Bordeaux, several vintages in Languedoc, in addition to completing a vintage at Matanzas Creek winery in California’s Sonoma Valley. For six years Andrew was a Winemaker at Lindeman’s Karadoc winery and in 1996, became the Winery Manager of Seppelt in Great Western; providing the perfect segue for his current role as Chief Winemaker Coldstream Hills which he has held since 2001.
