Overview

Coldstream Hills was established in 1985 by James and Suzanne Halliday and has since grown to become one of Australia's leading and most awarded small wineries.

The Coldstream Hills Reserve Shiraz is made from a selection of low yielding hillside vineyards located in the Lower Yarra Valley. Ripe, concentrated and textural, this excellent Reserve Shiraz boasts vibrant characters of dark cherry and plum, which are supported by seamless French oak, black olive and five-spice. It finishes with great length and chalky tannins. This wine reveals all the hallmarks of a perfect cool climate Yarra Valley Shiraz.

Huon Hooke

"The colour is superb: very deep red/purple; the bouquet very rich, spicy and smoky. It's full-bodied, dense and fleshy on the palate, with good concentration and weight. It seems to be a less pepper/spicy, riper year style."

Campbell Mattinson

"This release is in decent if not outstanding form. Alcohol blows the spice notes off to a degree, muting one of its tricks. It has good weight and excellent texture, the push of flavours through the finish entirely convincing. Black cherry, plum, bitumen, and a modest spray of pepper. Smoky oak is well applied and balanced; tannin has soaked straight into the fruit. It’s more accomplished than exciting."

Yarra Valley, Victoria

Cooler than Bordeaux yet warmer than Burgundy, picturesque Yarra Valley is one of Australia's foremost cool-climate wine regions. An easy one-hour’s drive from Melbourne, the area is home to more than 80 cellar doors. In addition to the huge range of wineries, the area boasts superb contemporary restaurants, authentic rustic farms - and luxury overnight accommodation if the sightseeing gets too much! The fertile Yarra Valley soils produce famously elegant and textured Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The growing season commenced with below average spring rainfall followed by a dry and warm ripening period. Average yields, combined with healthy vine canopies resulted in early flavour development in most vineyards and a compressed harvest intake.

Shiraz at Coldstream Hills is made using a number of techniques including fermentation in small open and static fermentation vessels. The wine is matured in French oak barrels for approximately sixteen months, prior to blending and bottling. It is then bottle matured for twelve months prior to release.

Andrew Fleming - Chief Winemaker

Growing up in wine country Mildura, at just 13 years of age, Andrew attempted to make his own wine; the end result was undrinkable, his father’s shed a shambles, but the winemaking seed was sown.
After completing a Bachelor of Agriculture at the University of Melbourne, Andrew spent two years at Mildara in Coonawarra before heading to Bordeaux where he furthered his winemaking qualifications with a Diplome National d’Oenologue from the University of Bordeaux. Since then he’s completed vintages at the iconic Chateau Haut Brion in Bordeaux, several vintages in Languedoc, in addition to completing a vintage at Matanzas Creek winery in California’s Sonoma Valley. For six years Andrew was a Winemaker at Lindeman’s Karadoc winery and in 1996, became the Winery Manager of Seppelt in Great Western; providing the perfect segue for his current role as Chief Winemaker Coldstream Hills which he has held since 2001.
