Overview

Overview

Coldstream Hills prides itself for having access to many of the best vineyards in the Yarra Valley. Back in the late 1980s, James Halliday introduced single vineyard wines to Coldstream Hills demonstrating their unique styles. The tradition has continued with the release of the Single Vineyard range.

Fine, textured and layered with aromatic grapefruit and lemon barley enhanced by subtle French oak. Boasts great length and balance. Sourced from the Rising Vineyard planted in 1991, this is a stunning testament to the single vineyard philosophy.

Taste Description

Taste Description

Nose

Attractive citrus pith and nectarine characters are evident with underlying river pebble and slaty notes. French oak enhances the wine beautifully adding further complexity to the wine.

Flavours and Palate

The palate is fine and long with great texture and lemon acidity. Citrus notes of lemon and lime dominate with attractive nectarine stone-fruit characters. Slate and cordite nuances are expressive of the vineyard and provide additional complexity; French oak is evident, but doesn't dominate. An outstanding Chardonnay from the Rising Vineyard - harmonious, complex and long.

Yarra Valley, Victoria

Cooler than Bordeaux yet warmer than Burgundy, picturesque Yarra Valley is one of Australia's foremost cool-climate wine regions. An easy one-hour’s drive from Melbourne, the area is home to more than 80 cellar doors. In addition to the huge range of wineries, the area boasts superb contemporary restaurants, authentic rustic farms - and luxury overnight accommodation if the sightseeing gets too much! The fertile Yarra Valley soils produce famously elegant and textured Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Vintage Conditions

The season began well as good soil moisture levels and relatively warm conditions during the spring months resulted in healthy vine growth. Significant above average rainfall in December and February as well as relatively warm and humid conditions placed considerable disease pressure on vineyards. Although the harvest dates were significantly later than in previous years, the whites reached optimum flavour development with beautifully balanced natural acidity.

Andrew Fleming - Chief Winemaker

Growing up in wine country Mildura, at just 13 years of age, Andrew attempted to make his own wine; the end result was undrinkable, his father’s shed a shambles, but the winemaking seed was sown.
After completing a Bachelor of Agriculture at the University of Melbourne, Andrew spent two years at Mildara in Coonawarra before heading to Bordeaux where he furthered his winemaking qualifications with a Diplome National d’Oenologue from the University of Bordeaux. Since then he’s completed vintages at the iconic Chateau Haut Brion in Bordeaux, several vintages in Languedoc, in addition to completing a vintage at Matanzas Creek winery in California’s Sonoma Valley. For six years Andrew was a Winemaker at Lindeman’s Karadoc winery and in 1996, became the Winery Manager of Seppelt in Great Western; providing the perfect segue for his current role as Chief Winemaker Coldstream Hills which he has held since 2001.
