Overview

Overview

Coldstream Hills prides itself for having access to many of the best vineyards in the Yarra Valley. Back in the late 1980s, James Halliday introduced single vineyard wines to Coldstream Hills demonstrating their unique styles. The tradition has continued with the release of the Single Vineyard range.

An opulent Pinot Noir from the Lower Yarra. Overlooking the Woori Yallock Creek, the Syme Vineyard has long been a source of outstanding quality Pinot Noir. Made traditionally in small open fermenters, this wine was matured in French oak barriques and puncheons for nine months. A complex and powerful release. Dark cherries intertwine with savoury characters and sweet spice and seamless French oak.

96 points Campbell Mattinson

Campbell Mattinson, Halliday Wine Companion

"Sinewy and structured but with the fruit to make it work. This is a smoky, twiggy wine with dark cherry, chicory and toast characters driving through, and very good length. It's inherently complex, almost autumnal, with spice and herb notes aplenty. When it reaches full maturity it's going to be quite something."

Nose

Brooding, powerful and ripe with dark cherry notes underpinned by subtle French oak, whole berry graphite-like savouriness and nutmeg spice. Earthy forest floor characters are evident in the background and will continue to evolve.

Flavours and Palate

A typical expression of The Esplanade Vineyard, with dark cherry notes, great texture and a chalky/grainy tannin finish. Complex and powerful, the palate displays hints of rhubarb, seamless French oak, whole bunch savouriness and spice.

Yarra Valley, Victoria

Cooler than Bordeaux yet warmer than Burgundy, picturesque Yarra Valley is one of Australia's foremost cool-climate wine regions. An easy one-hour’s drive from Melbourne, the area is home to more than 80 cellar doors. In addition to the huge range of wineries, the area boasts superb contemporary restaurants, authentic rustic farms - and luxury overnight accommodation if the sightseeing gets too much! The fertile Yarra Valley soils produce famously elegant and textured Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The 2017 vintage was a return to near perfect growing conditions with a cool spring followed by a mild to warm summer. Rainfall and yields were typical, allowing grape flavour and sugar to slowly develop and achieve optimum ripeness. The vintage produced a wine with excellent acid retention, freshness, vibrancy and great balance.
