Overview

Overview

Coldstream Hills prides itself for having access to many of the best vineyards in the Yarra Valley. Back in the late 1980s, James Halliday introduced single vineyard wines to Coldstream Hills demonstrating their unique styles. The tradition has continued with the release of the Single Vineyard range.

An opulent Pinot Noir from the Lower Yarra. Overlooking the Woori Yallock Creek, the Syme Vineyard has long been a source of outstanding quality Pinot Noir. Made traditionally in small open fermenters, this wine was matured in French oak barriques and puncheons for nine months. A complex and powerful release. Dark cherries intertwine with savoury characters and sweet spice and seamless French oak.

94 Points Huon Hooke

"Medium-deep red-purple colour, bright; the bouquet is driven by meaty charcuterie and dried-herb aromas, the palate elegantly crafted and medium weighted with a gentle finish populated with softly drying tannins. The palate is quite savoury and leads into a drying tannin exit, and the final impression is of a pinot noir with structure, drive and length, which needs a bit more time to reveal its true worth" - Huon Hooke

Nose

Attractive dark cherry with an underlay of earthiness, mineral graphite, and whole bunch spice. Subtle French oak adds complexity and aromatics, with hints of rose petal and five-spice evident in the background.

Flavours and Palate

Plush and inviting with an array of dark cherry and strawberry characters interwoven with spice, seamless French oak, and earthiness. Characteristically savoury and rustic with finely grained tannins, the mild season offered a more elegant expression of this single site.

Yarra Valley, Victoria

Cooler than Bordeaux yet warmer than Burgundy, picturesque Yarra Valley is one of Australia's foremost cool-climate wine regions. An easy one-hour’s drive from Melbourne, the area is home to more than 80 cellar doors. In addition to the huge range of wineries, the area boasts superb contemporary restaurants, authentic rustic farms - and luxury overnight accommodation if the sightseeing gets too much! The fertile Yarra Valley soils produce famously elegant and textured Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

A cold wet start to the growing season proved challenging in the vineyards with fruit set and ultimately yields lower than average. Summer began with high humidity, but during the ripening period became stable and dry. The onset of flavour development occurred relatively rapidly with fine acidity retained across all varieties.

Andrew Fleming - Chief Winemaker

Growing up in wine country Mildura, at just 13 years of age, Andrew attempted to make his own wine; the end result was undrinkable, his father’s shed a shambles, but the winemaking seed was sown.
After completing a Bachelor of Agriculture at the University of Melbourne, Andrew spent two years at Mildara in Coonawarra before heading to Bordeaux where he furthered his winemaking qualifications with a Diplome National d’Oenologue from the University of Bordeaux. Since then he’s completed vintages at the iconic Chateau Haut Brion in Bordeaux, several vintages in Languedoc, in addition to completing a vintage at Matanzas Creek winery in California’s Sonoma Valley. For six years Andrew was a Winemaker at Lindeman’s Karadoc winery and in 1996, became the Winery Manager of Seppelt in Great Western; providing the perfect segue for his current role as Chief Winemaker Coldstream Hills which he has held since 2001.
