Overview

Overview

Coldstream Hills was established in 1985 by James and Suzanne Halliday and has since grown to become one of Australia's leading and most awarded small wineries. Situated in the picturesque Yarra Valley east of Melbourne, the steep, close-planted vineyards of Coldstream Hills have become a signature of the region. So too have its wines, which reflect regional character, consistency, and style.

Sourced from hillside sloping vineyards in the Upper and Lower Yarra Valley, the grapes are pressed using gentle handling techniques. Coldstream Hills Chardonnay is barrel fermented and matured in French oak barrels for up to nine months prior to blending and bottling. The Upper Yarra Chardonnay generally provides attractive citrus characters, with mineral slate notes and length; the Lower Yarra is often fleshier in style with attractive white peach and quince characters. Blending of parcels from both regions results in wines of complexity, varietal definition, and length.

Philip Rich

"Barrel fermented and matured in a combination of seasoned and new French oak barriques, puncheons and vats. A light, bright green gold. Gee, Andrew Fleming and the team have a lovely touch when it comes to making chardonnay. Gentle aromas of nashi, just-ripened nectarines and a hint of vanillin spice. The palate has good mid-palate intensity, juicy acidity and a long, even finish. A steal at this price, really."

Taste Description

Nose

Attractive characters of lemon curd and white peach are enhanced with subtle French oak, nougat, pearl barley and mineral wet rock like notes. Layered and textural with fine acidity and length of flavour. Attractive notes of lemon rind, white peach and white florals are underpinned by subtle French oak, mineral and chalky phenolics.

Flavours and Palate

Elegant and flavoursome with great texture and beautifully balanced acidity. Lemon pith and white peach dominate with underlying grilled nut barrel fermentation, seamless oak, and subtle mineral slate.
An excellent vintage for Yarra Valley Chardonnay.

Yarra Valley, Victoria

Cooler than Bordeaux yet warmer than Burgundy, picturesque Yarra Valley is one of Australia's foremost cool-climate wine regions. An easy one-hour’s drive from Melbourne, the area is home to more than 80 cellar doors. In addition to the huge range of wineries, the area boasts superb contemporary restaurants, authentic rustic farms - and luxury overnight accommodation if the sightseeing gets too much! The fertile Yarra Valley soils produce famously elegant and textured Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

A challenging Spring across most vineyards with high rainfall and cold, wet conditions during flowering. Summer began with high humidity, but gradually eased to a mostly dry and stable weather pattern. A relatively late start to harvest with gentle ripening of flavours and excellent acid retention.
