Reserve Chardonnay 2014 Museum Release

Overview

Overview

The Coldstream Hills Reserve Chardonnay is the culmination of a strict selection process, where wine quality is paramount. Produced only in years where the quality is deemed to be exceptional, the wine is made from a selection of low yielding and mature vineyards. The Coldstream Hills Briarston Vineyard provides an outstanding resource of Bernard clone (French clone) Chardonnay, which adds elegance and length to the wine.
Gentle handling practices, including whole bunch pressing are carried out, with each batch undergoing barrel fermentation in new and seasoned French oak.

Note: The tasting note reflects the wine when it was tasted in 2014 upon its release. It has since evolved and developed further complexity following years of careful bottle maturation in our cellars.
Our winemaking team have recently tasted this wine and confirmed its condition. It is drinking beautifully today showcasing intriguing aged characteristics that can only be derived with the passage of time.

Campbell Mattinson

Stunning. Elegance and power combined. The lines of a sports car. Flint, funk, pristine stone fruit, gun smoke and mineral. It hits and drives and keeps on going. In the end the price looks more than reasonable; says it all. 96 Points.

Huon Hooke

Light to medium green-yellow in hue, this Chardonnay opens with a complex, sulfide-driven bouquet layered with lemon, honey, and subtle smoky, toasty oak. Hints of toasted hazelnut and almond add richness to the nose, complemented by honeyed lemon and grapefruit. The palate is tight, focused, and beautifully balanced, showing intensity, freshness, and superb harmony. The oak is seamlessly integrated, even at this early stage, supporting the wine’s clean, dry finish. A Chardonnay of real power, finesse, and class. 2015 - 2027. 96 Points.

Yarra Valley, Victoria

Cooler than Bordeaux yet warmer than Burgundy, picturesque Yarra Valley is one of Australia's foremost cool-climate wine regions. An easy one-hour’s drive from Melbourne, the area is home to more than 80 cellar doors. In addition to the huge range of wineries, the area boasts superb contemporary restaurants, authentic rustic farms - and luxury overnight accommodation if the sightseeing gets too much! The fertile Yarra Valley soils produce famously elegant and textured Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The growing season began with a variable spring season, followed by a dry and warm Summer. Conditions during the flowering period were not conducive to optimum fruit set, with many vineyards harvesting below average yields. A challenging vintage in many respects, but fruit quality remained of a high standard.

This wine was fermented and matured on lees for nine months in new (60%) and seasoned French oak puncheons and barriques.

Andrew Fleming - Chief Winemaker

Growing up in wine country Mildura, at just 13 years of age, Andrew attempted to make his own wine; the end result was undrinkable, his father’s shed a shambles, but the winemaking seed was sown.
After completing a Bachelor of Agriculture at the University of Melbourne, Andrew spent two years at Mildara in Coonawarra before heading to Bordeaux where he furthered his winemaking qualifications with a Diplome National d’Oenologue from the University of Bordeaux. Since then he’s completed vintages at the iconic Chateau Haut Brion in Bordeaux, several vintages in Languedoc, in addition to completing a vintage at Matanzas Creek winery in California’s Sonoma Valley. For six years Andrew was a Winemaker at Lindeman’s Karadoc winery and in 1996, became the Winery Manager of Seppelt in Great Western; providing the perfect segue for his current role as Chief Winemaker Coldstream Hills which he has held since 2001.
