Reserve Chardonnay 2021

Overview

Overview

The Coldstream Hills Reserve Chardonnay is the culmination of a strict selection process, where wine quality is paramount. Released only in years where the quality is deemed to be exceptional, the wine is made from a selection of low yielding and mature vineyards. The Coldstream Hills Briarston Vineyard provides an outstanding resource of Bernard clone (French clone) Chardonnay adding elegance, aromatics and length to the wine. House Block adds structure and drive to the wine. Gentle handling practices, including whole bunch pressing are carried out, with each batch undergoing barrel fermentation in new and seasoned French oak.

Taste Description

Taste Description

Nose

Vibrant citrus grapefruit peel and white florals, with underlying pearly barley and mealy notes. Subtle French oak and wet-rock mineral nuances enhance the aromatics and add complexity.

Flavours and Palate

Complex yet restrained with fine lemon curd and white peach characters underpinned by seamless French oak spice and mineral wet slate. Layered, textural and complex, the wine finishes with balanced juicy acidity and fine al dente pithiness.

Yarra Valley, Victoria

Cooler than Bordeaux yet warmer than Burgundy, picturesque Yarra Valley is one of Australia's foremost cool-climate wine regions. An easy one-hour’s drive from Melbourne, the area is home to more than 80 cellar doors. In addition to the huge range of wineries, the area boasts superb contemporary restaurants, authentic rustic farms - and luxury overnight accommodation if the sightseeing gets too much! The fertile Yarra Valley soils produce famously elegant and textured Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

A near perfect season for cool climate varieties in the Yarra. Good winter and spring rainfall replenished the soil profile allowing a good start to the growing season. Spring was generally mild with no frost, flowering occurred during warm, stable conditions which was ideal. The ripening season was generally mild and punctuated with well-timed rainfall. A very even harvest period with gradual ripening and flavour development, vibrant natural acidity, and excellent quality fruit.

Andrew Fleming - Chief Winemaker

Growing up in wine country Mildura, at just 13 years of age, Andrew attempted to make his own wine; the end result was undrinkable, his father’s shed a shambles, but the winemaking seed was sown.
After completing a Bachelor of Agriculture at the University of Melbourne, Andrew spent two years at Mildara in Coonawarra before heading to Bordeaux where he furthered his winemaking qualifications with a Diplome National d’Oenologue from the University of Bordeaux. Since then he’s completed vintages at the iconic Chateau Haut Brion in Bordeaux, several vintages in Languedoc, in addition to completing a vintage at Matanzas Creek winery in California’s Sonoma Valley. For six years Andrew was a Winemaker at Lindeman’s Karadoc winery and in 1996, became the Winery Manager of Seppelt in Great Western; providing the perfect segue for his current role as Chief Winemaker Coldstream Hills which he has held since 2001.
