Winemakers Andrew Fleming and Greg Jarratt have led the Coldstream Hills winemaking team for more than a decade.
Testament to their combined talents, Coldstream Hills wines receive continuous recognition at some of the country's most esteemed wine shows, cementing its position as one the Yarra Valley and Australia’s top wine producers.
James Halliday AM has managed the rare feat of living three lives: as senior partner in one of Australia's largest law firms; as a winemaker, and as a journalist and senior wine judge. Widely known for his witty and informative wine writing, James was one of the founders of Brokenwood in the Lower Hunter Valley, New South Wales, and thereafter Coldstream Hills in the Yarra Valley, Victoria.
James is an unmatched authority on every aspect of the wine industry - from the planting and pruning to the creation and marketing of the finished product. His winemaking has led him to sojourns in Bordeaux and Burgundy, and a long career as a wine judge in Australia and overseas.
In 1995, James received the wine industry's ultimate accolade, the Maurice O'Shea Award. In 2010, James was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his service to the wine industry.
Greg has been part of the winemaking team since 2001, and has helped cultivate Coldstream Hills' reputation as one of Australia's leading cool climate producers. Greg has more than 20 years winemaking experience from France, Australia and America, including the Hunter Valley, the Yarra Valley, the Languedoc and Bordeaux.
Greg grew up in Wagga Wagga, NSW, a town with a burgeoning wine and food industry.
Greg had his sights set on Chemical Engineering. But after completing his first year at Sydney University, he realised winemaking was a more interesting profession: he would later receive his Bachelor of Applied Science in Wine Science at Charles Sturt University.
Throughout University, Greg built his experience by working vintages around Australia and Bordeaux. Upon graduation, Greg returned to Bordeaux to work as a flying winemaker for several years.
Greg joined Coldstream Hills in 1995 as Assistant Winemaker and Cellar Hand. During his three-year tenure, Greg also returned to France where he completed vintages in the Languedoc on Southcorp's "La Perouse" project and Bordeaux.
In January 1998, Greg moved to the New South Wales Hunter Valley region to manage winemaking for a number of well-known Australian wineries including Lindemans, Tulloch and Hungerford Hill. In 2001, Greg retuned to the Yarra Valley and Coldstream Hills where he has been ever since.
Greg's winemaking passion at Coldstream Hills is also his greatest challenge – making Pinot Noir: "It's temperamental and fickle, and there are many winemaking choices to make but when it is good, it makes some of the finest wines in the world".
In addition to his winemaking experience, Greg is also an active wine show judge, a scholar of the elite Len Evans Tutorial and recipient of the Ron Potter Scholarship from Charles Sturt University.
Andrew has more than 30 years of winemaking experience, including vintages in France, Australia and America. He has been Senior Winemaker at Coldstream Hills since 2001.
Andrew's interest in winemaking began early. Growing up in Mildura, Andrew attempted to make his own wine at just 13 years old. While the end result was undrinkable, and his father's shed a shambles, the winemaking seed was sewn.
After completing a Bachelor of Agriculture from the University of Melbourne, Andrew spent two years working at the Mildara winery before heading to Bordeaux. In France, he furthered his winemaking qualifications with the Diplome National d'Oenologue from the University of Bordeaux.
In France, Andrew completed vintages at the iconic Chateau Haut Brion in Bordeaux and several vintages in the Languedoc region in the South of France. Andrew also completed a vintage at Matanzas Creek winery in the famous Sonoma Valley, California.
Returning to Australia, Andrew was Winemaker at Lindeman's Karadoc winery for six years. In 1996, he was made Winery Manager at Seppelt Great Western, providing the perfect segue for his current role as Senior Winemaker Coldstream Hills in one of Australia's premier cool-climate regions.
Testament to the quality of Andrew's winemaking talent, Coldstream Hills wines have been lauded at the country's top wine shows.
Andrew’s love of winemaking comes from the diversity of the role and the challenge of creating something from nature. Andrew's winemaking passion is working with two of the great wine varieties in the world – Chardonnay and Pinot Noir – from some of the country's best vineyards.
When Andrew isn't making wine, he's a busy family man with three boys. Weekends include golf, football and body surfing. He can also whip up an Asian stir fry or curry, and loves sharing his wines with his family and friends.
